Happy 2006. As we say goodbye to 2005, we cannot help but reminisce the goings-on that transpired, particularly those that could impart a bit of wisdom to us all. On behalf of the Board of Directors, FASGI would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped us pull through the challenges of the past year. We likewise share with you our achievements, which, with the limited resources for our operations, could be considered a milestone. The Transitional Housing Program has effectively served 31 participants during the 6 months of our operation; we have exceeded the quota.
We have successfully continued our partnership with ESCAPA, FCEC, LITC, FILVOTE. We are proud to have regained the TCAP.
Our staff retreat in November was fruitful. The Board, Management, and the staff had the opportunity to discuss certain issues and concerns resulting in the improvement of our service.
As we welcome the members of our newly-formed FASGI’s 25th Anniversary Committee, we want to thank them for gracing our reception last December 12. Knowing we have found partners with unconditional commitment to help us plan for a worthy cause gives us inspiration all the more to leave no stones unturned for a grand silver anniversary celebration that is aimed to be second to none.
Once again, we cannot thank all of you enough for your constant support to our worthy endeavors. It is a tall order to institute social change that would improve the quality of life, particularly our FASGI clients and the community at large, but with you behind us, our mission is do-able. Mabuhay kayong lahat.
With the staff, participants and guests during the Reception on Dec. 12 are some of the community leaders and FASGI Board members
who were present at the Committee formation Reception. Together with those unable to make it to the occasion,
the group have pledged a commitment to help plan the commemoration of FASGI’s 25th Anniversary.
Emergencies do happen anytime, anywhere. These could be natural or man-made disasters. When an emergency strikes, it’s too late to think of a contingency plan or how to cope with it.
VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION
Guest of Honor Antonio Villaraigoza, Mayor of the City of Los Angeles (reading the FASGI Newsletter at left), in his speech at the Veterans’ Day Celebration last November 11 held at FACLA, reiterated his empathy to the Filipino veterans.
A SUCCESS STORY LUMING: AN ILLUMINATING INSPIRATION
No person is immune from misfortune or personal obstacles. Our success story in this issue is about Luming (not her real name) and about having confidence in oneself. Luming, a former participant of FASGI’s Transitional Housing Program has a life story that would serve as a source of inspiration. Luming migrated from the Philippines to this land of “milk and honey” in the ‘80s. Realizing her American dream, she met, fell in love with, and married a native American; but they didn’t live happily ever after; the couple got divorced due to poverty on the 18th year of their marriage.
THP Training Center = Business Resource Center+Visitors’ Center
Participants of the Transitional Housing Program at FASGI need not be homeless again because they are making the most of the hands-on office training offered on site. After participating in, and “graduating” from the program, the participants will have upgraded their qualification and surely become marketable.
NEWS IN PHOTO
Co-organized by the Echo Park Parade Committee and the Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood council, with FASGI as one of the members of the planning Committee, the Echo Park Holiday Parade 2005 was held last December 3. The parade began at Sunset Blvd. corner Sutherland St. and ended at El Centro Del Pueblo’s Sports and Recreation Center. FASGI staff and volunteers, SIPA kids and many other organizations numbering about a hundred CBOs/groups, joined the fanfare which lasted about 2 hours. Awards were presented as the groups arrived at the end of the parade route to complete their performance routine.
